The purpose of the "Les Cahiers du Digital" collection is to introduce the public to the major challenges of digital transformation, drawing on the contributions of experts with recognized field knowledge on the subject. This 7th issue, published mid-October and entitled "The Metaverse: Definitions and Business Use Cases", features three articles on the subject.
As tech giants rival to create their own metaverse, companies are faced with a dilemma: invest in this emerging trend or sit on the sidelines and wait to see concrete results. This is precisely the point of departure chosen by the authors of this issue, who aim to shed a realistic and critical light on the subject.
The first chapter
The metaverse, a multifaceted concept
This first article, written by Michaël Schyns and Louise Denef (SIG AR/VR Lab - HEC), outlines the concept of metaverse in order to understand it better, while illustrating it in a rather convincing but nonetheless cautious way with a very concrete case study in the air transport sector.
The second chapter
The industrial metaverse and digital twins
This chapter looks at the field of industry, faced with the challenge of the transition to what is commonly known as Industry 4.0 or the factory of the future. Geoffroy Jennes (Equans) explores the human and managerial challenges of the industrial metaverse.
The third chapter
Starting with metavers
Finally, the third chapter describes how to carry out a metaverse project and provides concrete recommendations for organisations wishing to take the plunge. Whether in terms of preparation, methodology or appropriate tools, Jean-Marc Duyckaerts (Nirli) sets out some best practice in the field.
